Sunrise

Every morning, when he first opens his eyes

He looks around in wonder

Perhaps amazement of another day

Before a notion of recall is formed

He first turns to mom to curl in her breast

Once full he returns to his back, observing the ceiling

Then he turns right and sees dad

Without fail, each, every time

This is the face

A beaming glow in the already radiant sunrise

A smile so huge it seems his face will break

I don’t need anything but this moment each day

Yet he continues to do it throughout the day

There are screams, cries, and battles of diapers

But there is always love

There is always knowing who I am, who Sam is

He does not know much, but he knows love and us

That’s all we want
